Environmental Education in the Amazon

June 1, 2011 Update. $1060 raised. Fully Funded! Please support Fundación Tarpuna Causay/ Amazon Partnerships Foundation. PCV Grace Milanowski has brought to the attention of FOE a very deserving environmental education project in the Amazon. She hopes to raise $1000 to support environmental education.

The donation will support initiatives to supplement environmental education in schools in Tena and in communities in the canton Tena. As of October 2010, Grace Milanowski, a Peace Corps volunteer working with Amazon Partnerships has implemented a environmental education training program with 8 schools and high schools in Tena. Every month, teachers meet to receive an environmental education lesson plan they can use in their classrooms. The teachers have also agreed to organize and execute a final project with their students that encompasses the environmental themes they learned throughout the year. Click on read more for more details.

Foundation for People with Disabilities - Pedernales

The Simón Palacios Intriago Foundation for People with Disabilities is an organization dedicated to providing services to the surprisingly large disabled population of the County and City of Pedernales on the coast of Ecuador.  The members of the Foundation are mostly uneducated and impoverished women, yet despite their lack of personal economic resources, have worked together to establish, maintain, and improve the services offered by the Foundation since it was established in 2001. RPCV Ouida Chichester (omnibus 88) has been working with the community group since her time as a PCV.

This year the Foundation is launching a new project and expanding its services. For many years now the Foundation has been in possession of a large plot of land on the outskirts of town. They have long wanted to develop it and offer their members a space for income generation, offer new and varied forms of therapy (especially equine therapy) and have room for everyone to congregate, celebrate and work together. The first steps in this project are fencing the plot of land and building a small house for a caretaker. Plans will then be drawn up for expanding the Foundation's services. If you would like to donate, you can do so on our e-pay page.
